what they do

Asthma medicines are used to treat, prevent and control asthma symptoms in your child. There are two main types of asthma medications, and each serves a different purpose. Most children with persistent asthma will need both types of medicine.

Anti-inflammatories

These are important medicines to help control your child's asthma on an ongoing basis. These medications:

  • Reduce inflammation.
  • Need to be taken daily and may need to be taken for several weeks before they will begin to control asthma.
  • Lead to fewer asthma symptoms, better airflow, and fewer asthma attacks.

Bronchodilators

These medications:

  • Relax the muscles that tighten around the airways.
  • Open the airways, letting more air in and out of the lungs for easier breathing.
  • Some come in short-acting forms that are used as a rescue medicine to provide quick relief during an attack or symptoms.
